Next Everton Manager: 9/1 Howe the best option on six-man shortlist
Alex Keble takes a look at the top six candidates to be the next Everton manager, soccer tips Eddie Howe to get the job…

Marco Silva has finally been relieved of his duties at Everton, fired after a 5-2 defeat at Liverpool that aptly summed up his final few weeks in the job. The Toffees' soft midfield, overly attacking formation, and inability lớn defend at Anfield encapsulated much of what went wrong for Silva.

That an internal split prevented the board from acting sooner highlights the muddled thinking that's defined Everton for some time. Fans aren't exactly optimistic they'll get the next move right, either, although with initial talk of David Moyes dying down Everton have perhaps realised they need lớn make a positive step forward...

Here are the six top candidates lớn take over:

    David Moyes - 6/5
Moyes is an unpopular choice among Everton supporters despite his previous success between 2002 and 2013. He brought some memorable times lớn the club, including a last-16 appearance in the UEFA Cup, a top four finish, and some wonderful years with the likes of Tim Cahill, Wayne Rooney, Mikel Arteta, and Marouane Fellaini. But since then Moyes, renowned for dull defensive football, has performed poorly at Man Utd, Sunderland, West mê say, and Real Sociedad. His consistency in this regard has left Everton fans wary of his return - and wary of hiring a fire-fighter appointment at a crucial juncture for the club.

They have, after all, seen this before. The last time Everton sacked a tactically progressive manager mid-season - Ronald Koeman in October 2017 - they replaced him with Sam Allardyce, needlessly worrying about a relegation battle that was put lớn bed within weeks of the appointment. This is exactly the same situation; the Everton board would be panic-hiring the safety option, even though Everton are only six points behind Tottenham in eighth.

Fortunately, there has been so much negative press about Moyes - and such a strong backlash from supporters - that the board may indeed have cooled their interest. His odds were as short as 2/7 on Thursday evening, lengthening lớn 6/5 following last night's news...

    Vitor Pereira - 6/4
What to make of Pereira? The 51-year-old has been relatively successful at almost every club he has managed, winning trophies and occasionally inviting links with big European clubs, but then his odd career choices raise alarm bells. Everton, who interviewed him for the job in 2013, have put Pereira on a four-man shortlist, per Sky Sports.

Following consecutive league wins as Porto manager in 2012 and 2013, Pereira moved lớn Saudi Arabia for two years before returning to Europe with a six-month stint at Olympiacos, where he promptly won the double. He then got 1860 Munich relegated from the Bundesliga and joined Shanghai SIPG in China last year, who he guided lớn their first ever title win.

As one of the highest paid coaches in the world whose eclectic career moves suggest money is a motivating factor, today's link lớn Everton could be a ruse; Pereira is currently negotiating a new deal with Shanghai. He would be an interesting left-field appointment - but an unlikely one.

    Marcelo Gallardo - 9/1
This is more like it. Marcelo Gallardo would be an exciting, progressive, and risky choice that would surely have the backing of the fans. The 43-year-old has been River Plate manager since 2014 and in that time has won ten titles, making him statistically the most successful manager in the club's history.

His honours include two Copa Libertadores (the South American version of the Champions League) in 2015 and 2018 and one Copa Sudamericana (a Europa League equivalent), although River Plate have not been particularly successful in their domestic league. Seven of his ten trophies have come in continental competitions.
